Located in the Unesco-heritage Old Town, Neiburgs Hotel in Riga is an unforgettable experience whether you’re drawn to its historic charm, contemporary design, or familial warmth. ***
Location in Riga’s Old Town
Neiburgs Hotel is located in Riga’s Unesco-listed Old Town, a 15-minute walk away from the central bus station and a 20-minute taxi ride away from the main railway station. Directly opposite the hotel, you’ll find a couple of restaurants, such as the fine-dining DOM with an invitingly pretty facade. Many of Riga’s main sights, such as the House of the Blackheads, Riga Cathedral and Art Museum are located just a short stroll away. If you visit in December, there’s also a super cute Christmas market just around the corner.
Style of Neiburgs Hotel
Hotel Neiburgs is set in the heart of Riga’s Art Nouveau Old Town. Built in 1903, the hotel itself has a fabulous Art Nouveau facade. However, step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a modern hotel with attention to detail, most visible in the light fixtures by the likes of Moooi Dear Ingo in the restaurant and Zava Ociu in the library. On the ground floor, you’ll find the reception, restaurant and breakfast room as well as a library adorned with bookshelves and a tranquil atmosphere to unwind after sightseeing or catching up on work.
My visit to Neiburgs Hotel
I stayed in Neiburgs for two nights on my train trip around the Baltic states. I shared a twin room with my cousin, and we were both super happy with it. The bathroom had a striking red bathtub and fluffy robes were waiting in the cupboard. There was also a desk, seating area and a modernly equipped kitchenette in the room.
As soon as we got to Riga, we wanted to see the Christmas market which was still open in early January. The market was just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the Neiburgs which, in -30 degrees C, made us really happy – it was nice to be able to pop over to our room, put on some extra clothes and have a cup of tea amid all the sightseeing.
What I loved the most was the breakfast. And not just for the different types of healthy drinks, oats and not-se-healthy pancakes, but also for the lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. The space was pretty full but stayed calm and the almost wall-sized, arched windows gave directly to the cobbled and beautiful streets which make Riga so popular to visit.
The Highlight
Apart from the fab location and style, I love the fact that Hotel Neiburgs has belonged to the same family since 1903 when Ludvigs Neiburgs asked the Baltic German architect Wilhelm Bokslaff to design the house. Originally, the building had small shops on the ground floor. On the upper floors, there were rental flats. After WWII, Latvia became part of the Soviet Union and Ludvigs’s properties were nationalised. The Neiburgs family got the building back only in the 1990s when Latvia regained its independence. The hotel opened in 2009 and the restaurant in 2010. So, to sum this all up: I love staying in hotels that have stories to tell.
